I seriously can't believe how many people are going insane, or getting furious. Granted, your computers may have been adversely affected by this patch, and CCP's errant code was the catalyst...
But, don't ANY of you who are upset feel ANY blame of this belonging to Microsoft? Or, perhaps, the so-called Security Suites and Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware that didn't stop a simple gaming program from -removing- what is, seemingly, one of the core (and simple!) files for Windows stability?
I, personally, was alerted to the possibility to this problem from a post in local, about an hour before my premium content was finished downloading, and verified the problem minutes before updating. I alerted all my corp I could offline, and then my alliances and friends online.
Being that I actually know IT, I copied my boot.ini... renamed the original, and applied the patch... Mostly out of curiosity, but also I didn't care to wait to DL it twice on my slow line. It deleted the boot.ini without a single question from my OS at all. No protection for my core files from the so-called secure operating system.
It should -NOT- be -EVERY- other programmer in the world's full responsibility to tread lightly around what is, apparently, an egg shell, fragile, insecure operating system. It is the job of the CORE program, the OS, to protect itself from something so simple... Without even a peep, the file was gone. Does that make ANY sense?
Don't spout about Vista or Admin rights, either. Windows requires almost everything be admin to install... everyone is used to that. And Vista, well, if it was important enough to include such protections in vista, why is such a -simple- part of that protection missing from the thousands of updates we've been forced to endure from MS? (Many of which have crashed and rendered machines I was responsible for inoperable, too.)
On OSX, for example, you run as an admin most of the time. You are not bombarded by a gazillion dialogs like vista, but it certainly would not allow something of this magnitude to happen without at LEAST warning you you were about to do something to affect a core file and your stability, if it even let you at all. (btw, after a few dozen dialogs on vista... how often do you think the average.. or even expert.. user reads or cares about them anymore?)
So, calm down for a few moments and think about it. You are placing the heft or all the blame on this on CCP. Yeah, they messed up. But, the damage should NEVER have been allowed to happen, or should have been caught during or after, by the OS itself.
When you're done lambasting the -game- that -you- installed on your precious and supposedly oh-so life-important machine, and lost the irreplaceable files that you couldn't be bothered to backup in any simple way, why not have a go at the ones that allowed this to happen. Or, do you feel like they are just far too above this situation and totally innocent and above reproach.
You don't have to be a total tech head and guru to acknowledge or understand the above, just, at the least, mildly intelligent and non-pigheaded.
And, by the way.. to anyone who had a so-called "professional" blank their OS or hard drive to "fix" this... Blame them, too. They obviously are useless at repair and too damned lazy to bother attempting the simple fixes any competent repair tech should be doing. (Yes, I am quite aware of the more "complex" systems with raid being a bit more difficult.)
Then, stop blaming everyone and get on with your life. Play eve or don't. But, perhaps, also keep in mind that your computer is -always- at risk... and much more so the longer you use an Operating System that allows this to happen, and you might think about changing that problem at the source, or moving on to another OS which might be safer or more secure. The risk and responsibility from here out is up to you.
Oh, and for the billionth time you'll hear it in life... Back up your important stuff, too. |
